Day 1 - Seal Beach NWR to Sacramento NWR

 

The day was spent in and around Humboldt Bay NWR, in the morning we assisted the refuge personnel guiding two elementary school classes, including two "Blue Goose Skits" and Doris spoke to both groups plus Tim showed his slide/ video presentation to them and the 50 Ecology Club members from a local high-school.

Day 2 - Sacramento Refuge Complex Circumnavigation
Day 3 - Murdock School then on to Klamath, Oregon
Day 4 - Klamath to McNary NWR Washington via Umatilla NWR
Day 5 - Columbia High School, McNary NWR then on to The Dalles

Mike Mitchell was pressed into service...

 

the young people were full of questions...

 

we made it back to the deck with everyone still fairly dry...

and looked at shorebirds in the marsh through spotting scopes...

 

After the walkabout the students were treated to a skit about migration and the role of refuges...

Rudy and John "blue Goose" Wilks had their act down...

 

and it was good too.

Then Doris took the stage....

 

shared her love of nature and her art with the kids.

Then we broke for lunch with the refuge personnel...

 

after which the High School Ecology Club arrived....

and Refuge Manager Eric Nelson personally led the walk.

 

In the afternoon we had some free time for birding, Tim and John Fitch visited one of the outer units of the refuge on the south point area of Humboldt Bay

Later that evening we went to Manila Beach Dunes Community center for a Spaghetti Dinner with the Friends of the Manila Dunes who have adopted the Humboldt Bay Refuges as a project.
